Ugo Humbert is through to the final of the
Paris Masters becoming the first Frenchman since 2011 to achieve that accolade defeating
Karen Khachanov 6-7(6), 6-4, 6-3 at Paris Bercy advancing to his maiden championship match at Masters 1000 level.
The 26-year-old played lights out tennis in front of an incredible crowd who were well behind their home hope. As one of France's top hopes, he was annoyed at not getting Central Court billing. But he has forced the crowd and organisers to get behind him.
"I was disappointed, because I think I deserved better. I'm No. 1 French player, and I have practiced on the centre court," he said at the time.
"It's my favourite tournament. I was disappointed that I was not on the centre court. But I have deserved to play for the third round."
He capitalised on the physical limitations of the Russian who came close to retiring in the match as his run in recent weeks comes to an end. He becomes the fifth Frenchman to reach the title match at the indoor hard court.
Humbert was superb off both wings and earned his 13th consecutive win on indoor hard courts in France. The 15th seed won the title in Metz last year and then also won on the indoor surface in February.
He would seal his seventh tour-level title. He will face Alexander Zverev now. He has also backed up his superb win over Carlos Alcaraz earlier in the week. He hit 35 winners against Khachanov to move up to World No.14 and will rise to World No.11 if he wins the title.
THe physical limitations came in the third set which saw Khachanov falter at 3-2. He received a medical timeout for a leg injury. The World No.21 lost serve in the seventh game and was unable to move in the final two games as he succumbed to an easy defeat in the end.
