Carlos Alcaraz said last month that he doesn't care about winning tournaments or not, but
Patrick Mouratoglou has called this out as being contradictory.
The former coach of Serena Williams responded after Alcaraz said that enjoying his game is the only thing that occupies his mind when he is on court. As opposed to winning tournaments and titles.
Mouratoglou saw the viewpoint in an Instagram video that while it may be the case in terms of merely enjoying the process, he cared enough to win Indian Wells and this came out in his post match speech.
Alcaraz after making these comments won Indian Wells which was his first tournament win since Wimbledon, so perhaps that opinion has changed. But for Mouratoglou at least, he sees a contradictory nature to the statement.
"If I win tournaments or not, I don't care. It's about enjoying playing tennis, once I step on the court, putting my game. It's what only matters," the Spaniard told the media in early March. "That's why I'm really, really happy to lift this trophy, because I found myself at this tournament, and I felt really, really good."
Patrick Mouratoglou - former Serena Williams coach and current coach of Holger Rune weighs in.
"What Carlos Alcaraz is saying is that he doesn't care if he wins tournaments or not, that it's about enjoying the process," Patrick Mouratoglou responded. "But in the same sentence, he says, 'That's why I'm so happy that I lift the trophy,' so there's a little contradiction."
