The top spot in the ATP Rankings will 'see-saw' between Novak Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev over the next few months, according to former coach and tennis pundit Paul Annacone.
After spending more than two years at the top to take his overall tally to 361 weeks, Djokovic was surpassed by Medvedev on February 28. However, it was a short-lived stay at the top for the US Open champion as his third-round defeat to Gael Monfils at the BNP Paribas Open means Djokovic will move back to No 1 when the rankings are updated again on Monday.
Annacone, who mentored the likes of Pete Sampras and Roger Federer during his illustrious coaching career, believes there will be plenty of changes at the top in the near future.
“Novak seems to be around that No 1 ranking for about the last 30 years in a row. We are going to see the old see-saw battle between him and Medvedev,” he told Tennis Channel.
The American coach, though, does believe Medvedev will eventually “get comfortable” at the top while he also addressed the 26-year-old’s struggles against Gael Monfils in the third round.
Medvedev is yet to click at the BNP Paribas Open Indian Wells as his best showing was a run to the fourth round last year.
“You can never take that away from Medvedev, I think he’s going to get back there and get comfortable being there in the future,” Annacone said.
“I think he was not comfortable playing here in Indian Wells, it’s tough conditions here for people that hit the ball really flat. Clearly Medvedev was unsettled here and Gael took care of him.”
