Pavlyuchenkova and Rublev advance to Olympics Mixed Doubles final over Barty & Peers

Russians Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Andrey Rublev came back from a set down to defeat Ashleigh Barty and John Peers reaching the Olympic Games Mixed doubles finals.

It was a spectacular mixed doubles match between Team ROC and Team Australia as Pavlyuchenkova and Rublev guaranteed themselves and their country a medal. They played a spectacular match to defeated favoured Barty and Peers especially after losing the opening set.

The first set was a very tightly contested one. Neither pair allowed the other much and both of them held their serve rather easily. At 5-6, Barty and Peers got their 2nd set point and they failed to use it. They worked themselves to another one a few points later and this time used it to win the first 7-5.

The 2nd set was not a good one by the Australian pairing as they found themselves on the wrong side of several 50-50 points. They lost their serve and then once more to go down 1-5. Eventually, they pulled back one break but it was too much to overcome and the Russians went on to win it 6-3.

In the match tiebreak, we saw some sensational doubles play. The Australians were a bit sharper in the first half holding a 2 point lead after ten points 6-4. However, the Russians were the better team after that taking the lead. They had two match points they failed to use before the Australians got theirs.

It was 11-10 and that was the last point won as the Russian won 3 straight to close it out with 13-11.
