Novak Djokovic had some skirmishes with the
Roland Garros (French Open) crowd but he set the record straight after his win over Varillas on Sunday.
Most of his clash with the Parisian crowd came in his match against Davidovich Fokina with the crowd openly supporting the Spanish player. Annoyed by that, Djokovic heavily celebrated after taking the second set which earned him quite a bit of booes from the crowd. Between set 2 and 3 Djokovic took a medical timeout as Fokina used a toilet break and the crowd booed him for that as well which prompted John McEnroe to call it out during the broadcast.
Eventually, Djokovic did win the match referencing the booeing after the match. When pressed about it once more after his win over Varillas Djokovic said:
"I didn't say that. I didn't say that. Please, I said that the majority of the crowd is fine. They come, they enjoy tennis, they are respectful, they support either of the two players, but there are some individuals that create some issues. But I didn't say that the crowd is disrespectful. That's not true"
He then praised the crowd for the way they conducted themselves during his match against Varillas:
"I thought they were great, especially in the end. I mean, they gave me a very nice chanting and support, and I, you know, as a player, you always want to receive that love from the crowd. Of course I felt great. I thanked them in the interview."
