After a washout Friday in Montreal, the action will hopefully finally resume on Saturday at the Canadian Open (National Bank Open/Omnium Banque Nationale). The schedule is set and our preview runs through Saturday August 10's top ties.
Jannik Sinner will hopefully finally resume his tournament, Alexander Zverev has a date with Holger Rune. While in the WTA tournament, it is the Quarter-Final stage. Jessica Pegula and Aryna Sabalenka headline a mainly US line-up.

Rain rain go away....

With a horrific forecast, Montreal made a decision that many tournaments fail to do. They decided fairly early on to cancel the day knowing they would not get any play on. Most tournaments hang on to any little semblance of hope that they can get play on.
But this means there is a knock on effect. A likely frenetic finish this weekend with Jannik Sinner for instance only playing Last 16 now. Some haven't even finished Last 32 matches and the tournament is of course due to finish at the end of this weekend in particular on Monday so it will likely have to be two matches on Sunday in order to get back up to scratch.
But in reality it cannot be accounted for and the hope will be that no further setbacks take place which dent the tournament further. If play does take place on Saturday, it is the same slate as the day beforeJan
Jannik Sinner will hope to finally restart his campaign on Saturday.
Jannik Sinner will hope to finally restart his campaign on Saturday.
Sebastian Korda and Taylor Fritz open the day with the winner set to face off against Casper Ruud. Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune is perhaps the top tie of the day albeit between two players with name value but not the form.
Jannik Sinner and Alejandro Tabilo are set for their first meeting after also Hubert Hurkacz continues his campaign. Flavio Cobolli and Arthur Rinderknech will also hope to return two days later than expected to conclude their tie. Andrey Rublev, Kei Nishikori and Grigor Dimitrov also lead the way.
The hope will be that it will get some way closer to the Quarter-Finals but with unpredictable weather and a day already gone off the schedule, it is going to be an interesting day of catch-up in Canada.
Whether the day extra off will help a player like Sinner will remain to be seen too. He has not played much recently and has been ill so isn't back up to full strength yet. Whether it helps him to regain that remains to be seen.
But Zverev and Ruud likely lurk if he suffers a shock loss to Tabilo on Saturday, albeit not a huge shock given the season that the Chilean is having.

Quarter-Final time in Toronto

While in Montreal, they are barely into the Last 16. It is Quarter-Final time in Toronto. As has been the way all tournament, it is mainly Americans who are into the latter stages.
It all kicks off with two American's with Emma Navarro who saw off Marta Kostyuk taking on Taylor Townsend who has been brilliant so far this tournament. Both sit in the section with Aryna Sabalenka who is second up and a semi-final awaits potentially with the now tournament favourite. This after Coco Gauff's demise.
But given the continued improvement of Navarro in particular, no player can be really counted out from contention of those still remaining. The same can be said for Amanda Anisimova who still holds a 4-2 record Head to Head over Sabalenka albeit having lost one since the American returned to the tour.
Amanda Anisimova could act as a spoiler to Aryna Sabalenka's ambitions on Saturday and her Head to Head paints. a picture albeit off old form.

She benefited from a walkover as Anna Kalinskaya fell ill as her bad luck continues. But Anisimova who has not had the best time of it since her return to the sport at the turn of the year has been due some good luck and has got it. She will head back into the top 100 this week and will aim to topple the leading light remaining.
A real good match-up for her in the past, Anisimova has always been an incredible talent but looks to be backing up Washington excellence. Albeit a Sabalenka on any form is still very much not a given despite her sizeable Head to Head advantage.
But the main tie perhaps from an American perspective is in the early hours. Jessica Pegula who is defending champion will face Peyton Stearns. The latter who became a maiden WTA title winner earlier in the season had to toil in a frustrating walkover win over a hampered Victoria Azarenka has lost once prior to Pegula.
It will represent a tough test but one that could gleam a reward if she gets through it with Gauff's demise meaning that the other side of the draw comprises of Diana Shnaider. The rising Russian sealed her first top 10 win against Gauff for another milestone days after an Olympic silver medalist.
She faces her compatriot Liudmila Samsonova who seems to always go well in Canada and will aim to exert her experience against a tenacious rising star. But a Stearns v Shnaider semi-final potentially could blow the tournament wide open. The latter will likely be favourite despite Samsonova being proven. It has been the year of Shnaider at times and she continues to gain confidence and wins. As ever, WTA remains unpredictable and it could gleam an interesting outcome going into Sunday.
