Spanish tennis legend
Rafael Nadal has finally given his thoughts on the recent doping controversy surrounding World No.1
Jannik Sinner.
The Italian was informed he would be provisionally suspended after he tested positive for traces of clostebol, a banned substance, in March earlier this year. However, the suspension was quickly lifted and Sinner allowed to resume playing following a successful appeal by Sinner's legal team.
Nadal backs Sinner's innocence in doping allegations
Several members of the tennis community have since spoken out against the ruling, with some stating the reigning Australian Open champion received preferential treatment due to his superstar status. However, Nadal took to Sinner's defense, saying the Italian was found innocent and therefore, everyone should accept the judge's decision.
"I don't believe in that Sinner wanted or meant to dope," said the 22-time Grand Slam champion in an interview with El Hormiguero. "Justice is justice and we don't have to like it only when they decide what we want them to decide.
"If he hasn't been sanctioned, it's because the judge has clearly seen that he hasn't doped. I don't think they have judged him as innocent simply because he is the World No.1.”
Sinner is currently competing at the
US Open, where he faces American Tommy Paul for a quarterfinal berth.
