Former world number one
Roger Federer has been reportedly
snubbed for the home town tournament after a disagreement with the
organisers. The 43-year-old is regarded as one of the greatest players in the
history of men’s tennis in the signles category in the Open era.
Despite being regarded as one of the best ever, it has been
reported that the organisers for the home town tournament
Swiss Indoors in Basel
have snubbed Federer. According to a report published in Swiss media outlet
Blick, the former world number has not been mentioned on the poster or brochure
for the competition this year. The report further stated that his only mention has
been in the list of winners.
Federer had an incredible run while playing in the competition,
where he lifted the title 10 times. Despite being retired from professional
tennis for nearly two years, the Basel-born managed to take time out and
participate in the hometown tournament in some capacity. Federer finished his career with 20 Grand Slam titles. He
was the first-ever player in the history of men’s tennis in the singles
category in the Open era to win more than 15 major titles. His most successful competition
was Wimbledon, where he lifted the title eight times, which is still a record
in the competition’s history.
His first major title was at Wimbledon in
2003, where he defeated Australia’s Mark Philippoussis in the final in straight
sets with a score of 7–6(7–5), 6–2, 7–6(7–3). His last major title was the Australian
Open in 2018, where he got the better of Croatia’s Marin Cilic in the final in
a five-set thriller with a score of 6–2, 6–7(5–7), 6–3, 3–6, 6–1. Federer also
won an Olympic gold medal for his country. He won it in a doubles category in
2008 as he and his partner Stan Wawrinka managed to beat the pair of Simon
Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden in the final with a score of 6–3, 6–4,
6–7(4–7), 6–3.
