Asked about the player who influenced him to become a professional player, a former world no. 4 Kei Nishikori had no doubts, mentioning Roger Federer as his inspiration.
A former Major and the Masters 1000 finalist, Nishikori has been struggling with injuries in the last couple of years, staying outside the top-30 for 14 months and winning only two smaller titles after 2015, none since the start of 2019. Speaking about Roger ahead of his Barcelona Open first-round match, Kei said he always loved to watch Roger, calling him a unique player with incredible shots that no one can repeat.
Between 2011-2019, Roger and Kei played 11 times, with the Swiss scoring eight victories. Nishikori scored two early wins against the legend before Federer rattled off six straight triumphs. Kei ended the losing streak at the ATP Finals 2018, and Roger celebrated in their last meeting at Wimbledon 2019.
"Roger Federer was my inspiration when I wanted to become a professional player. He is a great player, and at the same time, very fun to watch. There are no too many players I'm excited to watch, but Roger is certainly among them. Roger is capable of hitting shots that no one can repeat, and I enjoy his tennis," Kei Nishikori said.
