Former world number one
Roger Federer received a heroic reception
at the Sporthilfe Super10Kampf event.
The event was organised at the Hallenstadion in Zurich,
Switzerland where the legendary tennis star made a surprising appearance and
delighted the 12,000 audience sitting in the arena.
Federer also went on to give a little speech where he
expressed delight for being able to attend the event. "It just occurred to
me, what a mistake it was that I wasn't here sooner,” he said.
He also went on to speak to young athletes and gave them an
encouraging message by stating: "You’ve made it this far and now it’s
really getting started for you. Of course financial support is essential, but
it’s also about showing that you believe in a talent. This form of support
gives an athlete a wonderful feeling. Especially at the beginning of a career,
you can achieve a lot with this sponsorship.”
Federer is often regarded as one of the greatest players in
the history of men’s singles tennis in the Open era, having won 20 Grand Slam
titles in his career.
The Basel-born announced retirement from the sport last year
after suffering from fitness concerns for a long period.
He was the first player in the men’s singles tennis history
to win more than 15 Grand Slam titles. He was also the first to lift 20 major
titles in his career.
