Mats Wilander believes that Roger Federer can still be competitive at Wimbledon and the Australian Open, not ruling the Swiss out from the title chances at this year's All England Club.
Roger turns 40 in August and currently experiences the most extended break of his career, not playing since the last year's Australian Open. The Swiss reached the semis in Melbourne and hasn't played ever since, struggling with a knee injury and undergoing surgeries in February and May. Following the second, Roger decided to wrap up the season and focus on 2021, hoping for a fresh start in March in Doha and Dubai.
Wilander gives Federer excellent chances at Wimbledon, saying he is always among the All England Club favorites. In 2019, Roger wasted two match points against Novak Djokovic in that epic final that went down to the wire, with the Serb prevailing in the decisive tie break.
"Roger Federer can still win Wimbledon or the Australian Open. He didn't enter Melbourne this year, but if he doesn't have a physical problem, he can rightly hope for the trophy at Wimbledon, where he can win at any time. Roland Garros and the US Open are a tougher affair, but Roger has targeted Wimbledon and the Olympics this year anyway - I expect at least a big result from him," Mats Wilander said.
