Andrey Rublev and
Jurij Rodionov are through to the Erste Bank Open round 2 after strong victories on Monday.
The final two matches of the day started in the evening and in the first one Andrey Rublev took on Norbert Gombos. The Russian was impressive in his performance winning 6-3 6-2 in just 58 minutes. There is not much to unpack here as it was the classical case of a better player crushing a weaker one. From the start, Rublev took control of the match and from there it was a rather easy road towards the victory. He served extremely well and his conversion rate on both of his serves was great. Points were kept short with Rublev hitting multiple winners before making a mistake. Gombos had no chance and he didn't even earn a break point today.
The 2nd match was much more interesting and competitive. It was hometown hopeful Jurij Rodionov against Shapovalov who is known as a stellar indoor performer. And the start showcased just that as Denis looked comfortable in serving and rallies. His play was better and he jumped out to an early 3-1 lead. At 4-2 he still looked comfortable but things quickly changed. From that moment on his play deteriorated mainly due to Rodionov getting comfortable in rallies. He first tied it at 4-4 before taking a 5-4 lead. Shapovalov became nervous and he could barely win a point unless he hit an ace or service winner. Ultimately Rodionov won the opening set 6-4.
The 2nd set was a stellar set from both players. They both served and played very well not allowing an inch while serving. We arrived at 5-5 and nobody even had a break point until then. At 6-5 for Rodionov Shapovalov once again played a very bad game visibly nervous in the high-pressure situation. The Austrian used that opportunity and closed out the match. A strong upset win for Rodionov in front of his home crowd.
