According to reports in the UK, the ban for Russian and Belarussian players at
Wimbledon could continue in 2023 as the event seeks legal action against the
WTA.
The decision to ban Russian and Belarussian players created an avalanche of things in the world of tennis. Some praised it, some hated it but overall it was an unprecedented move. One that the AELTC did not take lightly as it was following guidelines set out by the British government.
It created a mess in the community because the Tour tried to protect their players but by doing so they did more harm than good. By protecting a smaller group of players from these two countries they harmed many more with the points stripping. Chief among them, is Wimbledon winner Novak Djokovic who dropped from number 3 to number 7 and could possibly leave the top 10 due to his vaccine stance.
The decision was always branded as a one-time thing however recent reports from the UK indicate that the ban would likely remain in place should the British government continue its stance on the War on Ukraine. As the war is unlikely to resolve any time soon, the same harsh approach is widely expected.
There is also talk about the LTA appealing the fines received by both Tours at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It's a mess that keeps getting messier.
