Rick Macci, legendary coach and childhood mentor of WTA great
Serena Williams is of the humorous opinion that fans will finally get to view a 'real
French Open' with the absence of defending champion
Rafael Nadal.
The Spaniard has won 14 titles at
Roland Garros, with his first coming at age 18 in 2005. Furthermore, Nadal owns a 112-3 record at the event, but withdrew from this year's edition due to injury.
Macci believes in Nadal's absence, several other players will finally have a chance to lift the trophy, as opposed to finishing runner-up each year. The 68-year old jokingly stated as much with a tongue-in-cheek tweet.
"The French Open this year is really the French Open! 14 times it was really the Nadal Open Invitational with everybody invited to have a chance to hold the runner up trophy," Macci tweeted.
