Roman Safiullin's superb season continues, but for Andy Murray, it is yet another early exit and a frustrating one at the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday afternoon.
Murray was eased past in just over an hour and a half 6-3, 6-2 by the Russian ace after early exits in Beijing and Zhuhai over the past few weeks.
Losing his serve to begin the opening set, he had break chances to hit straight back but spurned three and this proved telling for the rest of the set which went with serve with no further chances handed to the Brit. Finally to lose the set it was a comfortable break for Safiullin to gain the early advantage.
One he hammered home in the second and final set. Going 2-0 up, he was finally broken at 2-1. But hit straight back and again in the final game of the set, he broke after Murray had points to hold serve.
It has been a frustrating Asian swing for Murray who hasn't really recovered from his loss to Stefanos Tsitsipas at Wimbledon in terms of form. But for Safiullin, it is a first Masters 1000 win and at 26, he is having his prime.
He reached the final at Chengdu last time out losing to Alexander Zverev and continues his superb form into Shanghai this time around.
