Joao Fonseca has started his
Roland Garros campaign with a bang, delivering an upset to 30th seed
Hubert Hurkacz with a commanding 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory. The teen sensation achieved his first win at the
French Open, and in straight sets against a high-caliber opponent like "Hubi."
Fonseca once again made a statement at a Grand Slam. Earlier this year, he secured the best win of his career by defeating world No. 9 Andrey Rublev in his Australian Open debut. Unfortunately for him, he couldn't convert that into a big run, falling in the second round to Lorenzo Sonego.
The Pole was coming off a notable week at the Geneva Open, where he ultimately fell in the final to Novak Djokovic in a close match (7-5, 6-7, 6-7). Nevertheless, "Hubi" arrived with confidence on clay courts, having reached the quarterfinals at the Rome Open and boasting 7 wins in his last 9 matches.
First Set: Fonseca takes control
The first set was practically absolute dominance from the Brazilian. Right from the start, he signaled trouble for "Hubi" by securing his first break point chance in the very first game. Despite this, the Pole managed to hold, though he never seemed comfortable on court.
The Brazilian deftly read Hurkacz's game – one of the best servers on Tour for years – and secured two consecutive breaks in the following games. Serving confidently, Fonseca won 20 of the next 25 points after the first game, surging to a 5-1 lead with virtually no opposition from his opponent. Hurkacz managed to hold his serve once more, but couldn't recover any of the breaks against him, and Fonseca comfortably claimed the set 6-2.
Joao Fonseca took the first set in just 28 minutes.
Second Set: Maintaining the pressure
The nightmare intensified for the Pole when Fonseca started the second set with a break, advancing to a 2-0 lead on his serve. By that point, the Brazilian had won 8 of the last 9 games played, and Hurkacz couldn't find a way to attack his opponent, who capitalized on every Hurkacz second serve to unleash forehand attacks and seek winners everywhere.
Hurkacz, the former world No. 8, partially stabilized the match with his serve, clinging to it to keep pace with his opponent. Meanwhile, Fonseca displayed a cool head worthy of a Tour veteran, having no trouble defending his service games. Without any new break points for either player, the Brazilian closed the set 6-4. The differences weren't vast this time, as the teenager converted 1 of 1 break opportunities, while Hurkacz squandered his only chance. They were even with 5 unforced errors each, while Hurkacz had only one more winner than his opponent (11 versus 10).
Third Set: The final blow
If a comeback seemed difficult for the Pole, everything seemed to collapse when Fonseca secured a break to love at the start of the third set, and victory began to take shape. Again, Fonseca's serve was unplayable throughout the set, and with his opponent increasingly demoralized and the crowd almost entirely behind the South American, it seemed only a matter of time before he closed out the match.
Fonseca maintained his lead without faltering, capitalizing on the momentum and pressure on his opponent to create several more break chances, securing a second break in the fifth game (4-1). At that point, it was just a matter of time until he sealed the victory. Fonseca squandered three match points on return at 1-5, but it didn't matter much at that stage. When it was his service game, the Brazilian closed the match without issues, 6-2, 6-4, 6-2, in a masterful performance that signals he can go deep in the tournament.
It's difficult to call this type of result from the Brazilian a surprise anymore; he has quickly made a name for himself on Tour, being the youngest player in the top 250. Fonseca is currently No. 57 in the live ranking (the best ranking of his career so far) and will aim for his first third-round appearance at a major against local wildcard Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
