Prize money is set for the 2025 US Open, which is due to take place between 24 August 2025 and 7 September 2025. It will be a record haul this time around with nearly $85 million across all competitions this year, including a record $5m for each of the women's and men's singles champions.
The total player compensation is jumping 20% to $90 million, the most in tennis history. It comes as the sport's leading players have been in discussions with each of the four major tournaments in a bid to receive a higher percentage of revenues at the US Open, Wimbledon, French Open and Australian Open.
Novak Djokovic, Coco Gauff, Jannik Sinner and Aryna Sabalenka leading the fields alongside Carlos Alcaraz. They were among the 20 players who signed a letter to the heads of the four Grand Slam events in March seeking more prize money. Now it seems like they have succeeded in their mission.
The previous high amount for a US Open was $3.85million in 2019 before it was decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic. This year's $5million represents a 39% hike from last year's amount $3.6million. The same percentage increase has been applied to the singles runner-up who get $2.5million. Semi-finalists will earn $1.26million, a 26% rise.
This in comparison to Wimbledon which also saw a rise in prize money with 7% to about $73million with the champions being paid around $4million for the grass court major. The $85 million goes for all of the tournaments including singles, doubles, qualifying and wheelchair events.
Jannik Sinner is the defending champion defeating Taylor Fritz in the final 6-3, 6-4, 7-5 to win the men's singles title at the 2024 US Open. It was his second major title at the time and Sinner became the fourth man to win both hardcourt singles majors in the same year. This after Mats Wilander, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic and the first to win two in a year since Guillermo Vilas.
Djokovic was the defending champion and suffered his earliest defeat at the US Open since 2006 and the earliest at a major since the 2017 Australian Open. It was the first year since 2002 that none of the Big Three won a major since the 2004 French Open.
Aryna Sabalenka defeated Jessica Pegula to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2024 US Open. It was her first US Open singles title and her third major singles title at the time. Sabalenka was the fifth woman to win both hardcourt majors in the same year and she will look to retain the title.
