Jannik Sinner becomes the second highest seed to fall at the Truist
Atlanta Open on Thursday evening after defeat to
Christopher O'Connell in straight sets.
Sinner lost out to the Australian 7-6(2), 6-4 and joins Milos Raonic, the top seed in falling early in the start of the US Open Series. He lost to Brandon Nakashima who has been in superb form as of late.
While for O'Connell, he saw off Denis Kudla in his opening round after coming through qualifying and took his chance to defeat the rising Italian who now has three straight defeats.
He lost both grass court matches on his first experience on the surface at Queen's Club (l. to Draper) and Wimbledon (l. to Fucsovics) and his form has not picked up yet on his return after he decided to skip the Olympic Games to come out early to the USA.
O'Connell was excellent with nine aces and no double faults completing 70% on his first serve and the winning percentage sitting at 75% while also taking his only break point opportunity going 1-0 up in the second before edging through 6-4 after coming through a closely fought tie-break and now he heads into his first ATP Quarter-Final.
