Sock was understandably emotional in the aftermath and saved a match point on his serve at 5-6 in the final set and when he won the tears nearly started to flood for the former top 10 player.
He has come through a lot with injuries which he detailed in his post match interview and said that he nearly quit due to how bad it was getting and that this vindicates all of his work he has done in his comeback.
”It’s been a tough couple of years, especially last year with not even playing that much. I was pretty close to not playing the sport anymore, so it means a lot,” Sock said. “Without the people in my corner, I probably wouldn’t be here. Thanks to them for keeping my belief up, my positivity up, because I didn’t have a whole lot there for awhile.”
Next up is fellow American, Steve Johnson and this is a match he is looking forward to and one he has a game plan for.
”He’s a good friend. I’ve known him for a long time and we know each other like the back of our hands,” Sock added. “I’ll have a game plan and I’ll try to go out and execute it, but I think I can play free now that I have a win finally.”
