Felix Auger-Aliassime appeared on the court for the first time during the Davis Cup Finals week. He did not play any match for Canada in Madrid as Pospisil and Shapovalov took care of all of the victories.
In his first appearance, he faced Roberto Bautista, who had a 1-1 record at the Davis Cup finals. Although it was a young Canadian who had the only break point in the first set, he did not convert it and Spaniard won the set in a tie-break.
In the second set, Bautista started with a break to get an early lead but Auger-Aliassime caught up later. However, that was not enough as Bautista got another break to win the set 6-3 and earn the first point for Spain.
In the second match, Denis Shapovalov fought for keeping Canadian hopes alive and Rafael Nadal had an opportunity to be the hero. Spaniard did not lose in any of his appearances during the Davis Cup Finals week and so whole Madrid believed in him.
And so Nadal started really good. Even though Shapovalov managed to turn the break points in the 2nd and 4th game away, he did not in 6th and Nadal got an advantage of the break. He later won the first set 6-3 and was one set away from making the home crowd happy.
In the second set, it was spectacular tennis from both players. Nadal had 3 break points he did not convert and Shapovalov had also one. But we did not see any breaks and so after 68 minutes, tie-break needed to decide. Nadal won it 9-7 to secure the title for Spain.
