Tennis commentator and former player Mary Carillo revealed why she refused to work at the recently concluded Laver Cup, stating that there were restrictions that had been placed with regards to the allegations made against Alexander Zverev.
Over the last year, Zverev has been accused of domestic violence by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharypova, with the lady claiming Zverev's physical and mental abuse had driven her to attempt suicide. The World No.4 has since denied these allegations, claiming them to be false.
In a brief statement issued to tennis journalist Ben Rothenberg, Carillo said she had asked the organizers how they planned on handling the Zverev allegations and was not satisfied with their responses.
"I was getting a lot of emails from the executive producer. I wrote back and said how are you handling the Alexander Zverev allegations? Obviously, one of the gravest parts of the allegations happened at the Laver Cup in Geneva,” Carillo said in reference to Sharypova’s suicide attempted which she claimed occurred there.
“She put me in tough with one of the big Laver Cup guys and I had a long conversation with him about my hesitance. I was sure how handstrung I would be by tennis Australia.”
Carillo would go on to reveal that the top Laver Cup officials would not directly answer any of her questions, and believed they were taking a more corporate approach to the matter. Furthermore, the veteran broadcaster publicly stated that she believes the domestic abuse allegations against Zverev are true.
"I don’t want to be part of the silence," said Carillo. "If you’re quiet it suggests you’re complicit. There wasn’t a real investigation in Geneva, it’s crazy.”
