Stan Wawrinka is set to retire from tennis at the end of the 2026 season, ending a majestic campaign competing among the greatest tennis players to exist. It is then fitting that he ends with a spectacular event in his home nation of Switzerland along with some icons of the game.
Labelled as "One Last Backhand," Wawrinka will have one final chance to step onto the court as he bids farewell to tennis. The tournament will take place on the 19th December in a grand exhibition hosted at the Palexpo in Geneva.
The three-time Grand Slam champion decided to pull the plug on his illustrious career at the end of 2026 in a decision made at the back-end of 2025, putting in a lot of thought to this tricky choice but coming to terms that he has had his time in the sport, and now to bow out with dignity and grace.
In doing so, he will step onto the court with some fellow icons of the game, the supporting act boosting the acclaim of the event even further while offering Wawrinka more prestigious guests to honour the glorious career played out.
Those are fellow Swiss talent and 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer who will also have another chance to play on home soil in front of an adoring crowd. For once, he will not be the Swiss everyone is talking about. Andy Murray and Gael Monfils will also make the trip, completing a star-studded lineup for what is set to be a spectacular evening of tennis.

"It's time for me to close this chapter"

He announced the news on his Instagram page. "Hello everyone. As you know, 2026 is my final year. After more than 20 years on the tour, it's time for me to close this chapter," he said.
"Over all these years, I've had the chance to experience so many incredible emotions thanks to tennis, but above all, thanks to you. Before I leave, I wanted to organise one last event to thank you and say goodbye. For this special evening, I'll be joined by friends with whom I've shared so many unforgettable moments throughout my career: Andy Murray, Gaël Monfils and Roger Federer.
"I wanted to create something truly special so that we could enjoy one final evening together. So, I'll see you on December 19, 2026, at Palexpo Geneva."

Dubbed "One Last Backhand," Stan Wawrinka is set for an emotional farewell
Named thoughtfully after the iconic shot seen numerous times enroute to Grand Slam titles, One Last Backhand is the final chance to see Wawrinka competing on court.
His final ATP event has also been chosen with care, opting to end it in Switzerland at the Swiss Indoors. There is still a while before the tournament will take place with there a lot of tennis still to be played on his farewell tour.
Wimbledon is the next event he will say a permanent goodbye to, earning a wildcard for one more venture in the only Grand Slam he failed to win, reaching the quarter-finals on two separate occasions between 2014 and 2015.
The North American hardcourt swing features some big competitions wrapped up with one final visit to the US Open. The 2016 champion will hope for one more venture at Flushing Meadows before he slowly winds down through the Asian swing before heading to the European indoor hardcourt swing one final time, culminating in his retirement from tennis.
While it will leave a gigantic hole in tennis, fans will remember fond memories of Wawrinka as he moves on with his life.
