The three-time Major champion Stan Wawrinka is ready to embrace another season at 35, hoping to fight for notable titles again after many setbacks with injuries over the last couple of years.
The former Melbourne champion is shaping up his game before the trip down under, looking for another good run on the big scene. In the recent interview, Stan spoke about his favorite titles, mentioning the first ATP crown in Umag 2006, three Major trophies, the Davis Cup title with Switzerland the Olympic Gold medal. Making his debut at the world's biggest sporting event in Beijing 2008, Stan shared the court with Roger Federer and won the doubles title to embrace an Olympic glory!
The Swiss pair had to dig deep during the competition's last two days, beating Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes in the quarters before stunning Bob and Mike Bryan in the semis to reach the title match against Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson. Roger and Stan were pumped and motivated to make one final push and grab the gold on August 16, ousting the Swedes 6-3, 6-4, 6-7, 6-3 to start a massive celebration of one of the Swiss tennis' proudest moments.
"It's impossible to pick my favorite title. My first ATP crown came in Umag in 2006; that was a significant moment. Winning the Davis Cup for Switzerland after playing it for 12 years was fabulous, as the Olympic gold medal with Roger Federer in Beijing 2008, especially since it was my first Olympics. Of course, I can't forget my three Major crowns. I can't be jealous of one of the greatest sportsmen of all time. When I got to the circuit, Roger was already at the top. I had a chance to meet Roger and share titles with him. I was fortunate to have been of the same generation as Roger," Stan Wawrinka said.
