Stefanos Tsitsipas overcomes Thanasi Kokkinakis to tie Laver Cup for Team Europe

Laver Cup 2024 began on Friday, September 20, with the first point for Team World over Team Europe after Francisco Cerúndolo's 4-6, 4-6 win over Casper Ruud. However, Stefanos Tsitsipas quickly brought the score back to level on aggregate.

The Greek was facing a Thanasi Kokkinakis who had just beaten him in the first round of the US Open 2024, so Tsitsipas came with much desire for revenge to a duel where he has swept after beating the Australian by 6-1,

In the first set there was practically no history. Stefanos Tsitsipas chained 5 consecutive games to leave practically sentenced the set, with two breaks on Kokkinakis' serve along the way. His rival added the "game of honor" of the set to get 5-1, but Tsitsipas was not going to fail in his first service to win the set, which closed by 6-1.

In the second set, Tsitsipas started as dominant as in the previous one, breaking Kokkinakis' serve in the first game of the set. Then, the Greek saved two break balls to confirm the previous one and take a 2-0 lead.

Tsitsipas would keep the one-game advantage until the end of the set, as the Australian was not able to break his serve even once in the whole match, and without the need to score another break, the Greek gave Europe a 1-1 tie after clinching the second set 6-4.

After the draw between Europe and Team World, the day will be closed by Grigor Dimitrov and Chilean Alejandro Tabilo, in a match that is expected to be the highlight of the day, and the doubles match where Carlos Alcaraz will debut in the tournament teaming up with Alexander Zverev, where the duo will face Americans Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton.
