Five years
ago,
Stefanos Tsitsipas, along with
Daniil Medvedev and
Alexander Zverev,
emerged as the great stars of the future and successors to the Big-3 in leading
the ATP Tour. The Greek finished 2019 as world No. 6 and with the title at the
ATP Finals.
However,
the expected success has not been reflected in Grand Slam titles, as all three
have a poor record: Medvedev 1-5, Tsitsipas (0-2), and Zverev 0-1. Among the
three of them, they have reached a total of 9 finals, but only the Russian was
able to clinch the title back in the 2021 US Open.
Furthermore,
in four of the finals they lost, they let the score slip after being up 2-0 in
sets: Zverev in the 2020 US Open, Tsitsipas in the 2021 French Open, and
Medvedev in the Australian Open 2022 and 2024.
A user on
Reddit recalled Tsitsipas' words at the 2019 ATP Finals: “We are the future, we
will be the ones that will fill the stadiums and get people to watch tennis.
We’re going to create the future of the sport, along with other younger players,”
Tsitsipas said.
The three
tennis players were born between 1996-1998, and on Reddit, it was mentioned
that the generation following them (2000s) has already surpassed them,
considering the two Grand Slam titles by Carlos Alcaraz and one more by Jannik
Sinner in the three finals they contested.
