Mackenzie McDonald reached his first ATP final by defeating Kei Nishikori 6-4 3-6 7-5 in the semifinal.
The American has played very solid tennis all week long in Washington and encountered Nishikori on a day where he did not have his best stuff. That allowed the American to grind out a victory propelling him into his first ATP final. It was a much needed week for McDonald who had not won back to back matches since the Australian Open.
Last week in Atlanta he ran into a red-hot Emil Ruusuvouri and the Finnish player proved better. After his match against Nishikori McDonald shared his thoughts:
“I’m super happy with my level right now and how I’m playing. I think I’m staying focussed throughout these matches which is really key, and something I don’t think I could have done a couple of years ago."
McDonald has been steadily improving over the years and the American usually plays his best on North American hard courts where he essentially grew up. His matchup in the final could not be any tougher as he will face Jannik SInner who also plays his best on hard courts.
Nonethteless the American is embracing the challenge saying:
“I’m super excited to be in a final, my first one. And here in the States, in D.C., it’s something special.”
The final is set to start at 23:00 CET and we will have a recap for you.
