Novak Djokovic took a two-set lead over
Hubert Hurkacz before the match was suspended in the fourth round of
Wimbledon.
After a smooth start to the tournament, without dropping a set, Djokovic advanced to the fourth round with comfortable victories over Pedro Cachín, Jordan Thompson, and Stan Wawrinka. On the other hand, Hubert Hurkacz entered as the 17th seed and defeated Albert Ramos Vinolas, Jan Choinski, and the 14th seed Lorenzo Musetti on his way to the fourth round.
From the first set, both players showcased their strong serves, which had been a key aspect of their performances in the earlier rounds. Djokovic had only lost one service game in the tournament so far, in his first-round match against Argentine Pedro Cachín. As for Hurkacz, he had not dropped a single service game.
Both Djokovic and Hurkacz held their serves in the first set, with the first part of the match highlighting their strong serving abilities. The Polish player displayed more aggression, totaling 18 winners and 12 unforced errors, compared to Djokovic's 11 winners and 4 unforced errors, the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
The first set reached a tie-break, where Hurkacz had a set point that he failed to convert as Djokovic capitalized on a short shot. The Polish player made an unforced error, allowing Djokovic to turn the tables and win the first set.
Djokovic and Hurkacz maintained a similar level of play in the second set, with short points and effectiveness in their serves, leading to another tie-break. This time, both players had their doubts, and half of the points were mini-breaks. The world No. 18 had a set point at 6-5 and with two serves in his favor, but once again, he squandered the opportunity, losing both service points and giving Djokovic the set.
The match was suspended due to the curfew imposed by All England Club to comply with the agreement with the neighbors in the area. The match will resume tomorrow.
