Tallon
Griekspoor defeated
Jordan Thompson 6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3 to claim the title at
the Libema Open 's-Hertogenbosch and make his debut in the top 30.
The
26-year-old Dutch tennis player started the grass season on a high note by
capturing the S'Hertogenbosch trophy. The past few months on clay were challenging
for Griekspoor, as he had to retire from the Madrid Open, Rome Open, and Geneva
Open in the weeks leading up to the 2023 French Open. At Roland Garros, he lost
in the second round to the 13th seed Hubert Hurkacz in five sets.
Playing on
home soil, Griekspoor showcased his best form and secured his second career
title (both in 2023), which will propel him into the top 30 for the first time.
On his path to the title, he defeated Mikael Ymer, Alexei Popyrin, Alex de
Minaur, Emil Ruusuvuori, and Jordan Thompson in the final with a score of
6-7(4), 7-6(3), 6-3.
Griekspoor
became the fourth Dutchman to win the tournament, following in the footsteps of
Richard Krajicek (1994, 1997), Sjeng Schalken (2002, 2003), and Tim van
Rijthoven (2022). He also became the first player from his country to win more
than one title in the same year, a feat that hadn't been achieved since
Schalken won two trophies in 2003.
The newly
crowned world No. 29 will be competing in the ATP 500 Halle Open this week, and
he will make his debut on Tuesday against Roberto Carballés Baena.
