Unlike the Indian Wells Masters earlier this year where
Taylor Fritz defeated
Marton Fucsovics, this time around on grass it was the Hungarian who won 6-4 7-5.
It was a very interesting matchup between these two as their previous match was very close that could have gone either way. This time around it was a pretty confident win for Fucsovics who has always been a very good grass player and found his form this year generally. The Hungarian produced another great effort to take down Fritz who considers himself one of the best players on the Tour on grass though today he wasn't good enough.
It was an interesting first set as Fucsovics really didn't serve that well. He had only one ace and four doubles faults but lost only one point behind his first serve. An impressive 14/15 without a single break point allowed. It doesn't get much better than that and much of that had to do with his 13 winners, twice as much as Fritz had (6).
The second set saw Fritz upp his aggressiveness as he had more winners than Fucsovics had in the second set but he also had more unforced errors. Both served pretty well for the most part but in the rallies, it was the Hungarian who was better. Fritz faced 5 break points and failed to save one of them. That was more than enough for Fucsovics to get it done in two sets, especially as he saved the only break point he faced.
Basically, it's a rather straightforward win. He played better in the rallies, he was more precise with his shots, he played better in the crucial rallies and managed to remain calm even when his serve didn't work as it needed to. Disappointing loss for Fritz as he misses out on the semi-final.
