Taylor Fritz played a really solid match to take down
Andrey Rublev 6-7(4) 6-2 7-5 for the Western & Southern Open quarterfinal.
It was a pretty great match early on between Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz as both served poorly which allowed for some great returns and rallies. The plan was clear for both. It was all about attacking, especially when a weaker serve arrived. Fritz got the first break points but he failed to use it and Rublev didn't use his either.
The American had a set point late in the set but failed to see that one too. Rublev had a break point in the next game and did not use it either so we ended up in a tiebreak. The tiebreak featured some very questionable choices from Fritz. He fell behind 0-4 and it was a point of no return. Rublev won the error-ridden first 7-4.
The 2nd set featured a nervous Rublev whose game completely fell apart completely as he called for a medical timeout latei in the set. The Russian felt pain in his upper leg but he continued to play after calling the medical down 2-5 in the second set. Fritz closed out the second one 6-3 but Rublev came out strong in the 2nd.
The Russian was putting up a serving clinic early not allowing Fritz any kind of momentum. The American kept up but he was less convincing than Rublev. The Russian nearly got a match point at 5-4 but Fritz held on and forced a break point in the next game. The American got the break he needed late in the set and finished off the match 6-5.
