Taylor Fritz is through to the Last 16 at the 2024 Rome Open after dominating his compatriot Sebastian Korda 6-3, 6-4 to set up a clash with Grigor Dimitrov in the latter stages as the American continues to find form and wins on clay.
Fritz made it to the semi-finals last week and continues his impressive form on clay with this latest foray and now faces one of the most consistent players on the ATP Tour in Dimitrov who has been in great form for the past eight months.
The 11th seed secured the win in dominating fashion in just over an hour and 12 minutes. He won the opener in just 29 minutes. After a pretty back and forth set with no iota of a retort on either serve, Fritz found the key put his foot down as he hammered home a break to make it 5-3. He then went on to claim the set 6-3.
While the second set was more of a matchup of missed match points. After an even set, he broke at 3-3 again dominantly and could've won it at 5-3 but he missed three match points and Korda held his serve. But he couldn't hammer home a potential comeback attempt with Fritz sealing the win on his sixth match point next game. Continued excellence from the American as he reaches the second week in style.
