Gael Monfils has dropped his biggest hint yet that he could retire from tennis soon after admitting the struggles of being away from his young child.
Monfils, 37, has a one-year-old daughter alongside wife and fellow professional
Elina Svitolina, who are both still active on their respective circuits. Monfils spoke to
Tennis Majors about the difficulties. "We’re very lucky that FaceTime exists, but it doesn’t replace anything."
However, the Frenchman said their daughter, named Skai, will travel with them to Indian Wells and the Miami Open where both Monfils and Svitolina will be competing. "The victories help a little, but it takes a long time. Tennis is cool, but I really miss my daughter," he added.
"We’ve already gone to Australia for a long time with her, we’re going to go back to the United States for a long time so we don’t want to disorient her too much either. It’s a challenge."
Monfils recently made the semi-final of the
Qatar Open where he lost to Jakub Mensik. His best finish at a Grand Slam is reaching the last four of the French Open in 2008 and the US Open in 2016.
