Jannik Sinner joked about his brother choosing to attend the Formula 1 race in Imola instead of supporting him at the Rome Open final. The Italian star fell to Carlos Alcaraz on home soil after a couple of strong weeks following his return from a doping-related break.
It was another thrilling final, marking the first meeting between Sinner and Alcaraz in six months. The Spaniard defeated the World No. 1 for the fourth consecutive time, lifting his seventh Masters 1000 title. Despite the loss, Sinner expressed satisfaction with his performance and the milestone of reaching another final.
During the trophy ceremony, Sinner appeared cheerful and proud of what he’d achieved, especially in front of the Italian crowd, even though he couldn't clinch the title. “I’d like to thank my team. There have been a few months that weren’t easy. It’s been a great result just to be here in the final,” he said. “We trained a lot. We can be proud of the results we achieved. We didn’t win the final, but we are happy with this trophy.”
The three-time Grand Slam champion also took a moment to congratulate his compatriot Jasmine Paolini, who won the women's singles title and the doubles crown alongside the legendary Sara Errani for the second year in a row. “It’s been a great success since we came here. Paolini won singles and doubles with Errani. Lorenzo and I did our part on the men’s side. Italians, we hope you’re happy with this tournament. A lot of my friends are here.”
On a lighter note, Sinner laughed about his brother’s absence from his player box. While he had expected him to attend the final in Rome, his brother Mark Sinner opted for another sporting event instead.
“Special thanks to my brother, who, instead of being here, is in Imola watching Formula 1,” he said with a smile. “He’s watching the racing. Thanks to all the people who came to this tournament. You gave me a lot of energy and encouragement. I tried today, but that’s all I had. It was a good test. Thanks to everyone,” he concluded.
