Grigor Dimitrov had a hilarious response to being reminded that he is the oldest player left in the draw after he downed
Carlos Alcaraz at the ATP Rolex
Shanghai Masters.
The World No. 20 defeated Aleksandar Vukic and Karen Khachanov in straight sets ahead of the Round of 16 clash with the top seed at the Qizhong Forest Sports City Arena.
Although many expected Alcaraz to progress to the quarter-finals, especially because the 20-year-old had defeated Dimitrov three times before, the Bulgarian player ended up pulling off his first victory against the Spaniard, winning their three-set battle 5-7, 6-2, 6-4.
Dimitrov jokes about age-related achievement
After the match, the interviewer reminded the 32-year-old that he was the oldest player left in the draw.
"You’re the oldest player left in the draw. But you don’t look the oldest at all," they said.
"Thanks for reminding me of that," Dimitrov jokingly responded.
Among the seeded players at the ATP 1000 tournament, Dimitrov was the fourth-oldest behind Adrian Mannarino (35), Dan Evans, and Jan-Lennard Struff (33). However, all three players have since been eliminated, with Struff going out in the first round while Evans and Mannarino were defeated in the second.
Dimitrov was born on May 16, 1991, and made his debut on the ATP Tour at the 2008 Ordina Open, where he lost his first-round match against Igor Andreev in straight sets.
Throughout his career, he has won the 2017 ATP Finals and eight ATP titles, although his last title was won six years ago at the 2017 Cincinnati Open.
Dimitrov will face Nicolas Jarry in the quarter-finals of the Shanghai Masters.
