Rafael Nadal nearly broke his nose with his racquet against Fognini and Wilander was shocked about how it happened.
Nadal was forced to stop play against Fognini to receive a medical timeout due to his nose bleeding. It bled after his racquet bounced after a backhand and hit him in the nose. Many were amazed by how that happened and so was Wilander who said after the match:
“I have no idea [how Nadal injured his nose]. It’s not going to happen on a clay court or a grass court. It’s only going to happen on a hard court. He nearly looked like he was fainting."
Wilander further added:
"That’s absolutely the weirdest accident I’ve ever seen, and the fact that it breaks the skin and you start bleeding. Amazing that he comes back. Maybe that was the wake up call he needed on the other hand.”
