Former World No.1 Boris Becker stated Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev both deserve to be in the Australian Open men's final, but the latter's brutal honesty might end up being a detriment to the Russian.
“For me, the two best players are in the final," said Becker while doing commentary for Eurosport. "For Nadal I’m happy because I’m a big fan of him and I was worried after his surgery. But Nadal wouldn’t be Nadal if he didn’t have a chance to win every time he plays a tournament."
However, the German believes while Nadal has learned how to handle himself with composure during and after matches, the same may not be true of Medvedev.
“Nadal has earned his status over the years," added Becker. "He says the right things even after the match. You can’t say that about Medvedev, who is very honest – that’s not always good. But Daniil also earned a few hearts here, especially with his fighting performance.”
Nadal will face Medvedev on Sunday in a bid to win his 21st Grand slam singles title, giving him one more than rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer on 20. Conversely, Medvedev has a chance to reach the pinnacle of tennis and become World No.1, ending the reign of Djokovic, who currently sits atop the ATP Rankings table.
