There has been healthy discourse regarding who has the best backhand in tennis history, and eight-time Grand Slam champion Andre Agassi has finally put the debate to rest after revealing his opinion on the subject.
Over the past few weeks, there has been discussion over the rise and subsequent disappearance of the one-handed backhand in tennis, particularly at the higher levels. The likes of Roger Federer, Richard Gasquet and Stan Wawrinka popularized the one-handed backhand, but lately the sport has been dominated by players who use two-handed backhands, like Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
The former World No.1 was known for his ball-striking ability off both wings, but was particularly effective with his backhand. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the retired American ace believes he possessed the best backhand in tennis history, due to it's effectiveness and quick take-back.
"I never hesitated," said Agassi in a recent interview. "I would take my backhand, because when the ball was on my racket, I knew exactly where I would send it.
"I choose mine, because when the ball was on my racket, I knew exactly where it would end up. This shot has paid me back in a very important way during my career."
