Rafael Nadal's emotional retirement announcement was one that tugged on the heartstrings of the tennis world but also worldwide. Quickly upon its release, it became the most-liked tennis post on social media.
Currently as of time of writing, it sits on 4.3million likes on Instagram and 394,000 likes on X showing the true effect of the retirement of Nadal who has often been a fans' favourite.
Nadal revealed that he will play at the 2024 Davis Cup Finals before his career ends. After cutting short his 2023 season due to injury, he made a comeback at the 2024 Brisbane International. This was to much fanfare but in reality didn't go as planned for one of the greats of the game who has had recurring injuries.
His announcement though was a strange one but also not unexpected given that all indications pointed towards Nadal continuing for at least another season at the top level before calling it a day with defeats at Roland Garros for instance to Alexander Zverev seemingly not being the befitting ending that the great Spaniard wanted.
But like many others, choosing your conclusion isn't exactly a decision to be made unless you go out on top and he has likely decided to end his run while he still can and also in front of his home fans in Malaga.
“I am here to let you know I am retiring from professional tennis. It is obviously a difficult decision, one that has taken me some time to make, but in this life, everything has a beginning and an end, and I think it’s the appropriate time to put an end to a career that has been long and much more successful than I could have ever imagined,” he said.
“Really, everything I have experienced has been a dream come true. I leave with the absolute peace of mind of having given my best, of having made an effort in every way. I can only end by saying a thousand thanks to all and see you soon,” he added.
