Roger Federer will return to Brazil for the first time in 14 years, with the 20-time Grand Slam champion set to share the court with Joao Fonseca at a special event in Sao Paulo on December 5. The Swiss legend confirmed the news in an Instagram video, revealing that he will join the Brazilian rising star at Clubhouse Nights, an event combining tennis with music and entertainment.
The announcement fulfils a long-held ambition for Fonseca, who has repeatedly spoken about his admiration for Federer. The 20-year-old Brazilian previously described the former world No. 1 as his greatest inspiration and expressed his wish to hit with him on court. The pair will now get that opportunity, although their meeting will take place in a special exhibition format rather than a traditional competitive match.
Federer last played tennis events in Brazil in 2012, when he headlined three exhibition matches in Sao Paulo in front of sold-out crowds. His upcoming appearance will be another opportunity for Brazilian fans to see the retired Swiss star in action, four years after he brought his professional career to an end in 2022.
The event also comes at a significant moment for Fonseca, who has had an interrupted 2026 season because of physical problems. The Brazilian reached his first Grand Slam quarter-final at Roland Garros but later withdrew from the US Open and ultimately ended his competitive campaign early.
Although he will not return to official ATP Tour action until 2027, December will give him the chance to share the court with one of his childhood idols before turning his attention to the new season.

Federer confirms special event with Fonseca in São Paulo

Federer revealed the news directly to Fonseca in a video shared on social media, confirming that the meeting would take place in December. The event is linked to On, the Swiss sportswear brand that sponsors Fonseca and in which Federer is an investor.
“Hey, Joao. Well, I guess the secret is out now,” Federer said in the video. “I am finally coming back to Brazil after all these years, and this December we will meet at Clubhouse Nights in São Paulo. See you on the court, my friend.”
Fonseca responded enthusiastically to the announcement, adding: “Let’s go for it!”
The December 5 gathering will feature a tennis meeting between the two players in a format that departs from the usual exhibition match. Music and entertainment will be incorporated into the event, which will be open to invited guests rather than following the structure of a conventional tournament.
The pair have met previously away from the court, including at the Laver Cup, but have never played tennis against each other. Federer’s visit will therefore provide their first opportunity to share the court, with the Brazilian getting the chance to experience the game alongside the player he has admired throughout his development.

Fonseca’s Federer dream comes after difficult end to 2026 season

Fonseca has made no secret of his admiration for Federer. Speaking to Brazilian outlet Globo, the young player explained why the opportunity to hit with the Swiss would mean so much to him, describing the former champion as an influence both on and off the court.
“Without a doubt, the person I’d most like to hit a ball with is Roger Federer,” the 20-year-old player said. “He’s always been an inspiration to me, both on and off the court. Just hitting a few balls with him would be a dream.”

The Brazilian enjoyed a major breakthrough at Roland Garros in June, reaching his first Grand Slam quarter-final after defeating Novak Djokovic and Casper Ruud in consecutive rounds. He eventually lost to Jakub Mensik in straight sets.
His progress was interrupted later in the summer by an abdominal injury. Fonseca defeated Botic van de Zandschulp in his opening match at the Cincinnati Open but withdrew before his scheduled third-round match against Christopher O’Connell. He subsequently missed the US Open as he continued his recovery.
After returning to represent Brazil in the Davis Cup in September, Fonseca eventually announced that he would not play any more official tournaments in 2026, prioritising his physical recovery and preparations for the following season. He currently sits at No. 40 in the ATP rankings.
December will nevertheless offer him two high-profile opportunities in São Paulo. A week after his meeting with Federer, Fonseca is scheduled to face Carlos Alcaraz in an exhibition on December 12. The match against the Spaniard will also serve as part of his preparation for 2027, giving the Brazilian a chance to test himself against the 7-time Grand Slam champion.
For now, however, the meeting with Federer stands out as the fulfilment of a personal ambition. The Swiss legend’s return to Brazil will bring together one of tennis’s most celebrated champions and a young player who grew up inspired by his achievements.
