Following the news of his devastating knee injury at Roland Garros, Novak Djokovic has been inundated with messages of support as he begins the recovery process.
The Serbian superstar suffered a right knee injury during his round of 16 win over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo at the French Open. Although Djokovic managed to prevail, he was forced to announce his withdrawal from the tournament the next day due to the injury. An MRI would later reveal the defending champion had suffered a torn medial meniscus on his right knee, an injury that would require surgery and weeks of recuperation.
"In the past day, I had to make some tough decisions after sustaining a meniscus tear during my last match," wrote Djokovic on an Instagram post. "I’m still processing it all but I am happy to update you that the surgery went well. I am so appreciative of the team of doctors who have been by my side, as well as the overwhelming support I have received from my fans.
"I’m going to do my best to be healthy and fit to return to the court as soon as possible. My love for this sport is strong and the desire to compete at the highest level is what keeps me going. Idemooo."
The sad news puts Djokovic's participation during the grass court season in doubt, with the Serbian likely to miss the Wimbledon Championships. Nonetheless, the tennis community, including stars of the ATP and WTA poured in their well wishes for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
"Get well soon !!" wrote WTA star Coco Gauff in response to Djokovic's post.
"Get well soon Nole," wrote Stefanos Tsitsipas on Twitter.
Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka also expressed his sympathy for the Serbian, posting a message through emojis that conveyed his support.
