Novak Djokovic believes in his ability to adapt once again to the
Wimbledon conditions and get the best out of his game after defeating Pedro Cachin on Monday afternoon.
A game fraught by Djokovic even helping out with drying the court after a rain delay, he got up close and personal with the surface after spending his post Roland Garros not playing any warm-ups.
A practice that has not done Djokovic much harm given that he has won seven Wimbledon titles.
“The opening match is always tricky because I haven’t played any lead-up matches,” Djokovic said post match.
“Grass is different to clay in terms of movement, game style and tactics. It probably takes more time to adapt but I’ve managed to do it pretty well in recent years. There is no reason why I can’t do it again.”
Lauds Cachin
But as ever, he also paid tribute to his opponent Cachin who went a break up in the customary Djokovic wobble to start Wimbledon.
Jack Draper famously took a set off him in 2021 before succumbing and while Cachin didn't have that success, it was still a good resolute display.
“Pedro deserves a round of applause for his performance,” he added.
“Especially in the third set he was serving very well and hitting his spots in the box extremely precise. It was not easy to break his serve.’
“I had a better start in the tiebreak and that helped win the tiebreak and close out the match.”
