World number two Iga Swiatek has stated that she is at ‘peace’ knowing that she has done nothing wrong despite testing positive in a dope test. The 23-year-old is already regarded as one of the best players in the world in women’s tennis in the singles category along with the likes of Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka and America’s Coco Gauff.
Swiatek has been in the news recently for the wrong reasons after testing positive for the banned substance Trimetazidine in an out-of-competition test. That development led to the five-time Grand Slam winner being handed a one-month ban, which she accepted.
Swiatek was recently featured in a video interview that was shared on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter — where she talked about the case in detail. The former world number one stated that despite testing positive for a banned substance, she is at 'peace’ knowing fully well that she has not done anything wrong. Swiatek further went on to highlight how difficult it has been for players who found positive in doping tests as there are fears of receiving unfair treatment from other players in the locker room as well as from the fans who might think otherwise.
“You can be at peace with yourself that you didn't do anything wrong,” she said. “But no one actually treats you like that… Especially the people that are kind of prosecuting you. Even when you’re telling the truth, you feel like they treat you like a liar. I fought for everything so hard the past years. What if people are going to, in their head, take it away from me? What if they're going to look at me differently? I was home at the time and still there were people coming for autographs or for a selfie. And I was like 'Well, are you gonna do that in one month?’”
