The TNT coverage of Roland Garros showcases several segments featuring former players as they give their takes on the ongoing Parisian Grand Slam. Retired Ukrainian pro Andrei Medvedev was a recent guest, and he gave fans a behind the scenes look at what went on when players were not training or preparing for tournaments.
The Kyiv native climbed to a career-high ranking of World No.4 in May 1994. Medvedev reached the French Open semifinals in 1993, before finishing runner-up to tennis great Andre Agassi at the same event in 1999.
Medvedev recalls amusing anecdote while clubbing in Paris
Both Agassi and Medvedev were guests at the TNT Sports desk, with each man giving their opinion on the current French Open tournament. After reminiscing over their clash 25 years ago, Medvedev stated he had read Agassi's book and was surprised at some of his former rival's habits. Furthermore, the Ukrainian revealed he had witnessed some disturbing scenes involving current players at a night club in Paris a few days earlier.
"I read your book, which was very interesting,” began Medvedev. “I learned that when you’re nervous you actually can drink vodka before the match. “Seriously. I was raised in the environment.. cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, forget it. Even bad behavior like staying late and going to night clubs was not acceptable if you want to be a pro. Obviously I opened my eyes differently when I saw the French guys and Spanish guys. "When I ended up in this night club on Monday, half of the draw was there . I’m here because I want to retire. I’m done. That’s why I’m here. They’re still in the 2nd round. They’re all smoking and drinking. What’s going on?"
