Rafael Jodar and
Pablo Carreno Busta are becoming very familiar with each other now. They have faced off in the last two Grand Slam tournaments in thrilling five-set matches. After being on the wrong end of another comeback at
Wimbledon, Carreno Busta has come out to have his say on the young Spaniard after more controversy has arisen around him.
The match spanned over two days following poor lighting that forced the players to return the next day in this intriguing second round tie. At Roland Garros, the pair were on court for a stunning three hours and 41 minutes in a dramatic five-set battle. After winning the first two sets, Carreno Busta won just five games for the rest of the match as the 19-year-old talent stormed back and book his spot in the quarter-final.
Now, they were drawn against each other in an earlier stage. Despite going 2-0 down, Carreno Busta fought back and won six of the next seven games to blast himself ahead. Jodar again broke early and this time survived efforts by his opponent to break back and got level. 30 minutes and three games later, Carreno Busta forced himself into the lead with a dominant set of tennis.
The momentum was in his camp, but the match would be suspended and play to resume the next day. A number of break points were missed early on with Jodar the one under pressure to get back into the match. He broke back to go 4-2 ahead before winning the fourth set and sending the tie the distance in familiar scenes at
Wimbledon.
Jodar was supreme, showing why everyone are so hyped around him. He went 4-1 ahead before the more senior Spanish tennis player halved the deficit. That was not enough with Jodar again coming out on top.
"I lacked a little energy and character"
Speaking following the match, Carreno Busta explained the difference between the two days of action. "He was more tense the first day, and today he came out more determined than I was," he told
Marca. "I think that was the key. He came out to win, and I lacked a little energy and character to go for the game. I was a bit complacent, and I don't really know why. I didn't go for the game, and it hurt me."
He was hapless to stop the match from being suspended. "I don't know. These things happen," he admitted. "When we saw the order of play, we already knew we'd have to stop because it's just tradition. They stop either because it rains or because they feel like it. It was already known that we weren't going to finish, and they didn't do anything to change it so we could finish."
However, he was quick to share his displeasure with these 'traditions.' "They're outdated, and in the end, these traditions are a bit obsolete. I knew we'd have to stop, and we played against the clock. I felt more comfortable on Wednesday."

Controversies surrounding Jodar
There has already been a number of incidents involving Jodar in his early career that has seen him get the spotlight for the wrong reasons. He was proven innocent of
not pushing a ball girl in Paris while
snubbing another one by accident when walking onto the court.
In this matchup alone, there was a lot of talk about his decision to go on a bathroom break, waiting until just before play was about to resume before he wandered away from the court. Carreno Busta was not too frustrated about what Jodar did but based it on prior experiences.
"It wasn't that I was annoyed that he went to the bathroom. If he asks and they let him, he goes. But during my career, I've asked to go to the bathroom after only 30 seconds on the bench, and they've told me no because I have to go at the beginning, and he went to the bathroom when there were only five seconds left.
"A substitution earlier, the umpire told me off because I'd made him wait a little while on his serve, and there were 12 or 13 seconds left. Although it's true that the server sets the pace. If you follow the rules strictly for one, they apply to the other. He told me he let him go to the bathroom because it was nearby. There was no tension with Rafa."
Another thing that irked Carreno Busta was the people in Jodar's friends in the crowd. "They've all been quite annoying during the match. It's true they're doing their job. It's also due to the custom of having one bench in a corner and the other in the middle of the court. These customs need to change, and both benches should be on the same side."
