Dominic Thiem
Dominic Thiem outlasted Stefanos Tsitsipas in the first match of this year's ATP Finals beating him in three sets.
It was a lenghty match that lasted over two hours but Dominic Thiem proved resilient enough to win the match 7-6(5) 4-6 6-3. The opening set started off slowly for both players as neither was too aggressive at the start. Somewhat of a sluggish start for the Greek gave Thiem a break point which he didn't use. Later in the set, he would have some more but once again Tsitsipas saved them. After that Stefanos settled in and started serving exceptionally well which is why the set ended in the tiebreak. Early on the Greek proved better and he had a 4-2 lead but Thiem managed to come back and win it 7-5. It was a spectacular set by Thiem who played it near to perfection and there was nothing Stefanos could do about it. He had a tiny chance but the margin for error was too small and he failed to hold the mini-break.
The 2nd set was when the Greek came alive and Thiem dropped off a bit. Early on he allowed Tsitsipas a break and the Greek took it which proved the crucial game of the set as Tsitsipas served exceptionally well throughout the set and he won it 6-4. Thiem could hardly win any point on the serve of the Greek who was relentless and he did not allow Thiem any break points. The final set opened with a strong service game from Thiem who went on to play well in the next two games as well winning both of them and taking a 3-0 lead. At 3-1 for Thiem, Tsitsipas had a break point to get back into the game but Thiem barely escaped the game after playing over 10 minutes in order to do so. That would be the last chance the Greek had as Theim served out the set and match 6-3.
