Dominic Thiem overcame a late resurgence by Jack Sock while Eugenie Bouchard outlasted Gavrilova to reach the 3rd round of Roland Garros.
Dominic Thiem is through to the next round of Roland Garros after an interesting matchup against Sock which left him very frustrated at times. The start was good for the Austrian, very good as he won the 1st set 6-1. He was aggressive, he was hitting shots his serve was working and Sock had no answers. As the match progressed the American played better ad better as he became more aggressive and his baseline shots started to clear the lines.
He held on for much of the set thanks to his newfound play and confidence but late in the set, he allowed Thiem to stick around in a game and Thiem punished him for it. The final set was similar to the 2nd but Thiem allowed Sock a late resurgence which early cost him the set. In the tiebreak, he was down 5-2 but he found a way to fight back and win the set and the match.
Eugenie Bouchard played a good match as well reaching the 3rd round of Roland Garros. Her opponent Gavrilova didn't make it easy for her as she won the first set 7-5. Genie had chances in that set but she allowed Gavrilova too much which she used to her advantage. The Canadian responded in strong fashion by taking a strong lead in the 2nd which she almost squandered. She held on to win it 6-4. The final one was the best play from her all day.
She took an early lead which she maintained before adding one more break in the final game of the match to win the set 6-3. The end result was 5-7 6-4 6-3 and she is moving to the next round.
