Dominic Thiem enjoyed a successful day at the Madrid Open moving on while Medvedev did not losing to Garin.
Thiem stepped out onto the courts early in the day to face Alex De Minaur who has played the best clay tennis of his career in Madrid. Even so, he was no match for Thiem who moved on with a straight-set win. De Minaur opened well taking an early break but Thiem was able to pull it back.
The first set was settled in the tiebreak which was a close one. De Minaur had a tiny lead in it even a set point later but Thiem ultimately won it 9-7. The 2nd set was another battle with Thiem having an early break and De Minaur pulling it back. In the end, Thiem was able to close it out with 6-4.
The 2nd set saw a 3 set battle between Medvedev and Garin. The Chilean player broke Medvedev early after Daniil called for an MTO due to a nosebleed. After it was stopped he continued to play but he didn't manage to pull the break back and Garin won the set 6-4. The 2nd set featured strong play from both players, especially on serve.
Due to that, we ended up in a tiebreak where Medvedev took over and won it 7-2. The 3rd set is when Medvedev started faltering. Garin was able to take a 3-1 lead and after that, he was able to add another break taking a 5-1 lead. In the end, he closed it out with a strong service 6-1.
