Ex-coach of the former world number one Serena Williams, Rennae Stubbs, has revealed what America’s Coco Gauff needs to do to win the WTA Finals. The last major event in women’s tennis calendar where top-eight players will participate to showcase their talent to secure the ultimate prize.
One of those players will be Gauff. An ex-coach of former world number one Serena, Stubbs, was recently quoted in a report where she identified what the one-time Grand Slam would need to do to lift the title. Stubbs was of the opinion that Gauff, who is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women’s tennis, has the ability to win against anyone, only if she manages to control her double faults.
“This is what I will say about Coco. If she serves less than six double faults in her matches, no matter what match she plays, she will win the tournament,” she said. “If you are serving 20, 21 doubles faults in a match and you lose 6-3, 6-4 in the third. I’m pretty sure if you get your serve in you will win. That was the last loss against Sabalenka. She is hitting the ball so well, she is arguably the best mover on the tour, her backhand is as good as anyone’s on tour, her first serve is as big as anyone’s on tour. It’s a matter of getting her second serve in court and not getting it handed to her. Let’s hope after her last match she has gone to Florida and really put the work into getting that second serve to the point where she feels like she can get it in. Under six double faults per match the likelihood is that she wins every match.”
This year, the WTA Finals title will be defended by current world number two Poland’s Iga Swiatek. She defeated America’s Jessica Pegula in the final in straight sets with a score of 6-1, 6-0.
