Ex-coach of the former world number one Serena Williams, Rennae
Stubbs, believes that America’s
Taylor Fritz has the ability to win a Grand
Slam, only if he improves one of his traits. The 27-year-old is regarded as the
best American player currently playing in men’s tennis in the singles category.
Fritz is currently taking part in the
ATP Finals. The last
major event in the men’s tennis calendar began on Sunday, where top-eight
players are taking part in order to secure the ultimate prize. He started the
competition with a strong performance against the one-time Grand Slam winner
Russia’s Daniil Medvedev where he came out on top in straight sets with a score
of 6-4, 6-3.
In the second match, however, Fritz struggled to keep the
momentum going as he came second-best against Italy’s
Jannik Sinner in straight
sets with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Ex-coach of the former world number one Serena,
Stubbs, in a post on social media platform Threads, backed the reigning world
number five to win a major title. She also went on to highlight one area where
he can improve if he wants to win a
“Taylor Fritz inability to come forward and volley is
costing him dealing against players like Sinner. I really believe Taylor is
good enough to win a major IF he improves that area of his game. Sinner is
SOOOO much better at the net, as is Carlos. This to me is the only thing
stopping him getting those wins,” she wrote.
Fritz is going through a fabulous 2024 season. It is the
season where he played his maiden Grand Slam final. That was in the US Open,
where he came second-best against the reigning world number-one Sinner in
straight sets with a score of 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Despite that, he became the first American
player in 18 years to play in the final of the US Open.
