Former Britain’s number one Tim Henman believes that his fellow countrywoman Emma Raducanu will finish her career with more Grand Slam titles than the reigning men’s world number two Alexander Zverev.
The 21-year-old was once regarded as the next big thing, especially when she lifted the US Open at the age of 18. The most impressive aspect of Raducanu’s success in that tournament was that she started from the qualifying round and went on to win the title, defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in the final in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
However, since then, not much has gone right for the Toronto-born star, who has struggled to keep the momentum going, largely because of fitness concerns. The former world number 10 has not managed to book a spot in the quarterfinal or beyond in any mega-event. Despite that, former Britain’s number one Henman has backed her to finish with more major titles than Zverev. He stated that in a video shared by Sky Sports on the social media platform X — previously known as Twitter.
On the other hand, Zverev remains one of the best players currently playing in men’s tennis but has never managed to win a Grand Slam in his career. Despite not winning a major title, the Hamburg-born star has remained very consistent over the last two years. Out of the last five events, he has played in the semifinal or beyond on three occasions. The most recent of these deep runs came in Melbourne this year, where he had a rough day and came second best against the reigning world number one in straight sets with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 6-3. It was the third time he ended up on the losing side in the final of a major competition. In 2020, he finished as the runner-up at the US Open after losing to Dominic Thiem in a five-set thriller with a score of 2–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6. Four years later, in 2024, Zverev once again lost in the final of a Grand Slam, this time to Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, who lifted the French Open after winning an epic five-set encounter with a score of 6–3, 2–6, 5–7, 6–1, 6–2.
